Echoing the need for India to embrace Sacred Economy

Gram Seva Sangh specializes in organizing artistic and cultural programs that show case issues ailing our country and recently Gram Seva Sangh organised such programs to showcase the philosophy behind the “Sacred Economy”.

The idea behind the Sacred Economy is also based on many of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles, which is why Gram Seva Sangh began their hunger Sathyagraha in support of Sacred Economy on Gandhi Jayanthi, the 150th birth anniversary of Bapuji. Here is an article written by  Gram Sangh Seva founder, Prasanna on Gandhi’s economic philosophy or economic wisdom.

Currently, our economic system is designed on achieving growth through over production for which, much of consumption is stimulated, it benefits a few giving them excess profits which does not get distributed to the masses. Youth are being groomed to manage businesses of Corporates in this economic system, they are not trained to manage jobs of Sacred Economy – farming, handloom, organic soap production, oil production, weaving, handloom, khadhi and a lot more.

Meanwhile, the segments of  the Sacred Economy mentioned above don’t get the required knowledge or assistance from Government and our system to develop and sustain themselves. They are neglected, while Corporates, industries and banks are supported by the Government. It is only fair that small  and local industries are also supported by Government as they are labour intensive segments of our economy that have potential to employ and provide livelihoods to many people.

https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/encourage-small-industries-prasanna/article29810482.ece

There is more emphasis on encouraging automation in the current system which has taken away jobs of many people. The current economic system has also damaged our environment by chopping away our greenery, spoiling our natural resources of river, forests, air etc.  There is no space here for farmers, textile workers, small vendors and other marginalized groups of the Sacred Economy.

This is therefore a Monster economy, leading to centralization of power in the hands of Corporates and industries while Nature is being exploited by them.  This goes against the principles of our Constitution as well, as this does not honour Article 39 of our Constitution summaries that –

Everybody has a right to an adequate means of livelihood and that wealth, material and natural resources should not be concentrated in the hands of a few.

(Scroll down to page 21 of this link taken from the Indian Government website and read the full particulars of Article 39.)

The alternate Sacred Economy, takes care of those now ignored groups giving them jobs that cause the least damage to our environment. This system makes use of local labour and raw materials which is healthy for the growth and development of our rural and  domestic economies along with their ecologies. There is a need to decongest urban India that is suffocated with over development which has strained Urban India’s natural resources of land, water etc. Sacred Economy would bring that much needed balance to India benefiting both rural and urban India.

Protection of Nature, giving jobs to all people and having the village and the urban civilisations connect and co-exist in harmony is what Sacred Economy stands for.

Below is a link of cultural program “Mushaira”, where literary enthusiasts and talented poets narrated verses, proses and sung songs resonating with wisdom, stirring feelings to protect nature, greenery, revive India that is ailing with problems of – joblessness, corruption, exploitation, rural disintegration and more, by living the philosophy of our Bapu, Mahatma Gandhiji. The poems showcased how many of Gandhi’s wisdom and philosophies are relevant today to develop the sacred economy by promoting and growing India’s rural and age old, sacred, alternate economy  that gives space to farmers, textile workers, khadi fabric manufacturers, fishermen, sherperts, small vendors, toy makers, small scale industry workers and entrepreneurs, artisans, weavers and others of the Sacred economy category to exist and earn their livelihoods.

Gram Seva Sangh’s Sathyagraha in Support of Sacred Economy (Oct 2 to Oct 11)

Gram Seva Sangh, an Organisation working to revive livelihoods of the rural and marginalised communities of India and bridge the gap between the urban and rural communities, have been pressing the Government recently to focus on developing the Sacred Economy.

Campaigning for the revival of the Sacred Economy

In short, the Sacred economy are those jobs that have been neglected to be developed in the current economic system and therefore this section of the workforce have become marginalised groups struggling to make a living, as these jobs have been destroyed but still they hold relevance.

Our farmers, labourers, small traders, vendors, khadhi designers, crafts men, garment factory workers, fishermen, etc , need to thrive and this is possible only when the Sacred Economy is revived through refinance, zero taxes and restructuring of the economy.

Gram Seva Sangh, started a Satyagraha campaign in support of the Sacred Economy to get the Government to hear the demands to revive the Sacred Economy and respond positively.

The wisdom behind the Sacred Economy embodies the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, who embraced khadhi and chakra supporting them because he rightly believed they represent India’s strong, traditional, domestic economy that has given livelihoods to many people, making them self reliant to lead a life of dignity. Traditionally, the Indian economy has been giving jobs to weavers, farmers, khadhi designers and others who have unfortunately become marginalised groups today .

So, in tune with this philosophy inspired by Bapuji’s wisdom, Gram Seva Sangh adopted the non-violent yet powerful weapon of Satyagraha and launched a Hunger Sathyagraha campaign to have the Government officials hear the demands for Sacred Economy and take needed positive action.

Satyagraha began on Oct 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday

The Hunger Satyagraha in support of Sacred economy began on October 2, 2019 which was  Ganjayanthi, the day, the Nation celebrated the 150th  birth anniversary of Gandhiji. The venue the Satyagraha took place was at  Vallabh Niketan, Bangalore.

Work to strengthen the campaign continues…

Gram Sangh Seva continues its campaign in support for Sacred Economy. This initial phase of Satyagraha had succeeded in getting the message across to the Government and getting assurance from  Union Minister, Sadananda in arranging a meeting with the Finance Ministry where Gram Sangh Seva’s expert committee can discuss the Sacred Economy demands.

Please read about the release of the Sacred Economy demands that happened during the Satyagraha.

Concluding this with a poem composed highlighting Gram Sangh Seva’s demand for reviving the Sacred Economy -:

“Give jobs, give jobs, give us those jobs that keep the green,
Give jobs, give jobs, give us those jobs that keep civilisation civilised,
Give jobs, give jobs, give us those jobs that don’t kill jobs,
Give jobs, give jobs, give us those jobs that do not kill villages,
Give jobs, give jobs, give us those jobs that do not change the climate,
Give jobs, give job,  give us those jobs those jobs that keep nature natural,
Give us jobs, give us jobs”

Sacred Economy demands released and explained on October 6th

Below are the demands of Sacred Economy placed before Government with a letter sent to Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitaram, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and CM of Karnataka, Shri BS Yediyurappa Reddy.

This demand was released during Gram Sangh Seva’s Hunger Satyagraha in support of Sacred Economy – Oct 6th 2019, Gram Sangh Seva founder and Gandhian  theatre artist, Prasanna had started his first day of indefinite fast that day.

Gram Sangh Seva placed these demands represented by its expert committee chaired by Dr. Vinod Vyasulu.

  • Zero Tax, Refinance, Restructure All Sacred Sectors of Economy…

No tax on all segments of the Sacred Economy –  Farmers, labourers, small traders, vendors, khadhi designers, crafts men, garment factory workers, fishermen, small scale and retail industry players, handloom sector etc

  • Raw materials should be procured locally within a 100 km radius. Raw materials procured beyond this radius are considered imported raw materials.

  • Jobs that involve more of human labour and hands; that are labour intensive should be developed.

Sacred Economy is that economic system which produces jobs that involve more of human labour (60%) and aspires to utilise maximum amount of local raw materials (60%). There should not be more than 40% use of automation and 40% use of imported raw materials in this economy system.

On the basis of this, the Scale of Sacred Economy is gauged where at one end of the scale there is complete hand making and use of local raw materials and in the other opposite end, there is the scale for Monster Economy  with there being complete automation and complete use of imported raw materials.

Check out the attached document below for more details .

These demands support the principles of our Indian Constitution, supporting the Constitutional guidelines mentioned in Article 39 of our Indian Constitution which summarises that –

Everybody has a right to an adequate means of livelihood and that wealth, material and natural resources should not be concentrated in the hands of a few.

The revival of Sacred Economy will create a just society with a fair economy giving livelihoods to all, while protecting the greenery and purity of our environment (air, water, soil, trees).

 Sacred Economy Advantages -:

  • The Sacred Economy causes least damage to the environment as compared to the current Monster Economy that has encouraged big Organisations/Corporations to develop at the cost of cutting down our country’s greenery, polluting our air,  river bodies, soil etc.

  • The Sacred Economy, is not capital intensive; it requires less capital investment from Government to kick start.

  • The Sacred Economy will employ the many unemployed now and give them livelihoods, so they live in dignity and become self-reliant.

  • The Sacred Economy, already contributes atleast 60% to India’s GDP. Reviving the Sacred Economy would revive India’s rural economy. Right now, rural people are forced to migrate to Cities for livelihoods leading to overpopulation and unsustainable growth in Cities. There is stress on Cities’ natural resources of land and water. The Sacred economy would develop the villages in a sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion, so people don’t need to migrate to Cities.

Protest for Press Freedom and Freedom of Expression – A Report

Mahatma Gandhi Statue, M G Road, Bengaluru | 12th Mar 2019, 5:0 PM

Under the banner of Grama Seva Sangha, well known activists, writers, and artists did a protest opposing the ongoing assault of Freedom of Speech on individuals, community and the groups who speak about Government actions, plans and wrong doings. Freedom fighter H.S.Doreswamy, writer Bolwar Mohammed Kunhi, poet Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy, actor and director B.Suresh, journalist Suguta Sreenivasraju, Actor Prakash Raj, Artist Gouri Dutt, Mentors of Gram Seva Sangha G.K.Suresh, Shamala Devi, G.S.R .Krishnan, Sanath Kumar, Secretary Abhilash, Phaneesh and others participated in the protest.

On this occasion, dignitaries have shared their opinions as follows.

B Suresh, Actor and Filmmaker

B.Suresh: What we are facing in the last few days is the situation of 1975 emergency. Blocking social media accounts and sending people jail if they analyze the plus & minus of government policies or if artists wrote cartoons indicates that a country is caught with cancer disease. The assault on cartoonist P.Mohammed, sufferings of Ravi Kumar and the words spoken by the government in the case of N.Ram of The Hindu newspaper shows that all these incidents are similar to the assault made on various political parties at the time of 1975 emergency.  Public should became aware and continuously oppose these to save our fundamental Right of Freedom of Speech. We might be jailed for talking like this, and then our next generation should say these words. This should happen as a continuous movement.

Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy: Voltaire has said that “I might not agree your words but I respect the Right of Freedom to say your words, that is your lifelong Right” which is very relevant now.  Recently the literature award given to the Dalit Professor Ravikant of Lucknow has been taken back for writing against the government in social media. All government employees have opposed this decision. We have reached such a low situation. State which doesn’t have Press Freedom and Freedom of Speech is not democratic.

H.S.Doreswamy: Government is behaving like we are doing wrong if we oppose government by making a group, organizing a meeting or sharing information to people. When certain individuals or government makes mistakes, it is necessary to unfold secret information. That is Press Dharma. It is very necessary from Public interest. If the press information is true, then it is the Press Dharma to keep the source of information secret. The Hindu newspaper has done a big job. There is no need to reveal the source of information if it is true.

Sugata Srinivasaraju, Prominent Journalist and Writer

Suguta Sreenivasaraju: In recent days, many laws against journalists have been misused. It is an effort to suppress journalist voice. All of us know how the Official Secrets Act has been misused in the case of The Hindu newspaper. The National Security Act has been misused on Imphal Manipur journalist Kishorechandra and he has been not released from jail. In the recent meeting held at Editor Guilds where I was also present, A resolution was made on “Decriminalizing content”. Recently, we could see this on how Shillong Times editor was penalized by High Court on account of Contempt of Court. Colonial Laws has been removed in many countries. But in our country such laws has been used against journalist & activists for harassing.

Praksah Rai, Actor

Prakash Raj: We have reached such a situation where we could easily identify which political it belongs if we switch on a channel or read a newspaper. In Vikram-Bethala stories, it was said that if we say a lie our head would cut into thousand pieces. But now if we say a lie, it is behaved like thousand votes would come. The government which is not able to protect Rafale documents is saying criminal to people who are following Press Dharma. It is like saying “fence itself is gazing the land”. But people would be observing.  When it crosses a limit, we have seen in history that progressive people, artists have stood up and will stand up. People consciousness is still alive. This might be a small voice but it is the voice of truth. Hence it would be heard loudly.

B Suresh, Actor, Filmmaker

Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy, Poet, Writer

H S Doreswamy, Freedom Fighter, Activist

Sugata Srinivasaraju, Prominent Journalist, Writer

“Its wrong and immoral for a nation to supply intoxicating liquor to those who are addicted to drink” – M K Gandhi.

Mahatma GandhiJi on Prohibition

Going on the same lines of the above quote the Gram Seva Sangh organised a open ended seminar on 23rd February 2019 , Tuesday in Gandhi Bhavan, Bangalore,  drawing inferences on how alcohol is a social tragedy. Unless you are living in the biblical times we know that alcohol is both a socio – cultural problem. Reports suggest that around 80% accidents , 85% domestic violence and also 37% of rapes in this ” Rama Rajya” happens due to alcoholism.

TOI reports on recent AIIMS studies

And inspite of being informed citizens there exists some unanswered questions on ban of liquor. Considering the magnanimity of the issue there are loop holes as to where to start? By whom? Is restriction or prohibition the answer? To seek answers to these complex questions, rural women from around 20 districts of North Karnataka set out to a Padyatra, in ray of hope demanding the ban of liquor,  from Chitradurga to Bengaluru. What started with merely 2500 women grew outrageously into around 5000 of them covering a distance of 200km in the 12 day Padyatra.

The attrocity and the cause of the issue spread rampently and the domino effect of which , was the Seminar. The Seminar consisted of participants of the Padyatra and celebrated key note speakers. A prayer song followed by paying heartful condolences to a lost soul (Renuka amma) in the Padyatra marked the beginning of the Seminar.

The key note speakers belonged to diverse deaneries including The Seminar threw light on the repercussions of alcohol on a social front and the possible actions that could be taken towards banning the same. The key note speakers who decorated the cause of the session, were all celebrated personalities from diverse fields of expertise, Law, medicine, civil, theatrics and politics, hence providing us with several perspectives on the same issue.  To name a few, Arundhati Nag , Prasanna , Rani Satish , Dr. Prathima Murthy , Ajay Kumar  singh to Victims of Alcoholism like Mrs. Mokshamma , Mrs Virupuna and Mrs Uma, all speakers had one point to say in commonality,  that alcohol destroys families before Liver.

Yashodhara Daasappa, Freedom Fighter and Veteran Politician from Karnataka

The first speaker in the seminar was Mrs. Virupama, who was a victim of alcohol-abuse herself. She spoke about how her family faces an financial crunch due to the habitual drinking and addiction of all the men in her family. Then she went on to explain how the Padyaatra took shape and how many stages it was divided into. As a conclusion she also urged that alcohol ban should be a global cause and concern.

Virupamma, Activist, Madya Nishedha Andolana Karnataka

The second speaker Mr. Prasanna drew our attention towards the plight of the government as it only looks at alcohol through the lens of vote- banks or market value. He also probed deep into facts by stating that there are about 1.5 lakh alcohol addicts in the country with 10 crore of them clinically hospitalised. This instilled a sense of awareness amongst us, the audience and it truly called for some action.

Prasanna, Activist and Theatre Person

The third speech of the seminar was given by Mrs.Rani Satish, Karnataka Congress Vice President. Considering the political stand of the government to not ban alcohol, this speech was key in enlightening us about the issue on a political front. The gist of her speech mainly talked about how alcoholism is a threat to all rural and also urban people. She also claims that if states like Bihar, Gujrat and many others can reach success in becoming dry states, then Karnataka too can make it possible. ‘The protests shouldn’t stop’ she motivated the audience.

Rani Sateesh, Ex Minister, Veteran Politician, Karnataka

Coming up on the dais as the fourth speaker was Dr Pratima Murthy, director of de-addiction in NIMHANS. She enhanced our knowledge by stating the scientific health reports of WHO (World Health Organisation) which claims that 14.5% of the world between the ages of 10-60 years face drinking problems.

Dr Pratima Murthy, Head of Centre for Addiction Medicine, NIMHANS

Mookshamma, the next speaker and a participant of the Padyaatra, also indicated that due to the problems caused due to liquor is growing rampant, the 20,000 women are even fired to ban the same. She drew notice to the fact that old women, pregnant women and many other victims walked as one, in unity towards the cause and upheld the true essence of women empowerment.

Mokshamma, Activist, Madya Nishedha Andolana KarnatakaMrs. Veena from Hubli, being the legal expert, added how the support of law will help in achieving the noble cause. The directive principles of state policy, constitutionally guarantees total prohibition of drugs except the ones used for medicinal purposes, in Article 47.

National trend of Intoxicants usage reported recently by TOI

To end the seminar in an apt way, Arundati Nag, famous theatre artist, empathized with the victims of this social evil and talked about the challenges of the dream of alcohol ban. Having said that, she also went on to assure the commoners that she will always be there as a source of support for the protests and upcoming events.

Arundathi Nag, Actor and Theatre Person

In journey of seeking solutions to their existing problems they reached out to the government and inturn got a cold response. The government claims that the administration runs in the revenue earned by the selling of alcohol and hence the ban of the Same isn’t affordable. The hipocracy of this situation is evident as the socio cultural repercussions of alcoholism seeps down to a greater depth. According to the directive principles of the state policies , Article 47 of the Indian constitution guarantees a total prohibition of drugs excepting those used in medicine. Though constitutionally guaranteed this situation seems “ideal”for a simple reason, demand is equal to supply.

The Social Tragedy of Alcohol Seminar Inaugural song by mamatha

Though the Padyatra seemed glorious in its endeavours, the brutal harassment and domestic violence faced by the women remains to be the dark side of the bitter truth. The politicians making this issue about vote bank politics reflects the stale nature of administration thus trivilising the noble cause of alcohol ban. As one of the women stated THIS is just the beginning. “The tears we shed are dry but fire in our soul ignites to greater notches, we will strive till alcohol is banned. All the guest joined the seminar decided to join the movement and strengthen further.

Literary Meet for Tolerance

Dakshinayana and Gram Seva Sangh

2 September 2018, Sunday, 10 AM to 6 PM

Senate Hall, Central College Campus, Bengaluru

Friends,

Indian society is being fragmented. We are facing dangers seen rarely in history.

Humanity in religion, lifestyles, coexistence are getting destroyed. The march of mechanized civilization, economic upheavals, destruction of the village, elimination of livelihoods seems unstoppable. Although the true reasons for such crises are different, they are being transformed into religious issues. The human dimensions of religion are being ignored in the widespread propaganda to project religion in terms of either perverse exclusivism or historical retribution. As a result, intolerance and hatred are finding easy justification and the constitution is being systematically subverted.

Literature has always found its inner strength in times of a crisis through a dialogue with the community. Our responsibility therefore at this juncture is to initiate dialogue within our own communities to counter the current situation. We need to explore ways to do this together. In this background, Dakshinayana and Gram Seva Sangh have come together to host an Indian Literary Meet at the Senate Hall of Central College (now a part of the Central University of Bangalore). In the meet, writers in Kannada will be joined by many other language writers from across India.

The Meet will address two central ideas: pacification of all forms of religious extremism and rebuilding the village, while also celebrating the innate sense of goodness of all humans. We expect that the meet will provide a new direction to Kannada Literature as well as to Indian Literature at large.

We, the writers and artists, are committed to taking the responsibility of restoring tolerance in society. We shall each go to our backyards and dialogue with our communities.

We extend a warm personal invitation to you to be part of this Literary Meet for Tolerance.

Thank You
